About Juniper Pass

Juniper Pass sits just below Mount Blue Sky along the two-lane highway connecting Evergreen and Idaho Springs. It’s a short drive from Denver and open year-round. The main lookout area is perched atop large rocky cliffs, offering panoramic mountain views after a short, easy walk from the parking area.

The pass is ideal for couples seeking an intimate, scenic location without committing to a long hike. While the lookout can occasionally attract other visitors, its typically not very busy compared to nearby trails. And the trails that lead away from the main lookout areas can provide more privacy and unique photo opportunities.

Seasonal Guide for a Juniper Pass Proposal

Juniper Pass is open and accessible throughout the year.  Depending on the season, the terrain will be slightly different. This area is beautiful but its also on top of an exposed rocky cliff, so sometimes the weather can be tricky.  We’ll go over each season and what to expect, plus pros and cons of each to help you plan your Juniper Pass proposal.

Spring Proposals Here

Spring at Juniper Pass is unpredictable. Snowstorms are possible throughout the spring, so check the forecast, pack warm layers, and make sure your vehicle is equipped for icy conditions. The highway is plowed year round. And the parking area is sometimes plowed, but not always. We suggest going in a vehicle with some clearance and AWD or 4WD during this time of year.

Pros: Fewer crowds, Pine trees provide greenery during the spring, mountain views
Cons: Unpredictable weather, potentially snowy roads

Summer Proposals Here

Because of its elevation, Juniper Pass is a great place to go during the summer to beat the summer heat. Summer brings cool temperatures higher up in the mountains. Mornings are best for soft flattering light and also for avoiding afternoon thunderstorms (which are a common occurrence in Colorado during the summer).

Pros: Comfortable weather, A great morning location with mountain views
Cons: More people (but typically this spot is never super busy with crowds)

Fall Proposals here

Fall offers crisp air and beautiful scenery. While the pass itself lacks trees with changing colors, nearby trails like Echo Lake (5 minutes away) provide seasonal color. We often go to Echo Lake as a secondary portrait location. It adds variety but can be a really busy area (so we don’t suggest Echo Lake for a proposal moment). The end of fall can sometimes be cold, so make sure to bring warm layers.

Pros: Cooler temperatures, peaceful setting
Cons: Limited fall foliage at the pass

Winter Proposals here

Juniper Pass remains accessible in winter, though parking may require navigating through some snow. The combination of pine forests, rocky cliffs and snow can provide vibrant contrast and be beautiful winter scenery. Like in Spring, we suggest going in a vehicle with some clearance and AWD or 4WD to handle possibly icy road conditions.

Pros: Less crowded, scenic winter views
Cons: Cold, windy conditions, snowy roads are possible

Tips for a Successful Juniper Pass Proposal

Plan for Elevation:  This location is high in elevation, which makes it a great spot to see the mountains, but can also mean cold weather and potentially altitude sickness.  You may experience colder temperatures and thinner air. Hydrate well, bring warm layers, and prepare for potential altitude effects.

Main Lookout Area:  The main lookout area here has a small wall built around it with a narrow trail.  This spot of the trail can typically be a little more crowded.  For privacy, explore branching trails that reach the cliff tops. Be sure to stay safe and away from steep drop-offs.

Best Time of Day: We like the mornings best in this spot for soft flattering light. Also mornings help to avoid crowds and afternoon thunderstorms.

Driving in Winter Conditions: If you’re driving here during icy or snowy conditions, make sure you have a car that can handle the windy roads with snow and ice.  The road goes through pine forest which casts a lot of shade and can make for some slippery spots.

Check the Weather Before You Go:  If you really want to capture the mountain views that surround this proposal location, make sure you check the weather before you go.  Overcast or stormy days can make it hard to see the mountains below the pass.

Navigating Tips: The lookout area does not have any identifying signs that say Juniper Pass.  And if you put Juniper Pass into Google Maps, it takes you to a different part of the road.  The lookout area is actually listed in Google Maps as the Juniper Pass Picnic Area.

Cell Phone Service: Cell phone service is patchy in this part of the mountains.  The parking area usually has 1 or 2 bars for most cell phone providers, but it may not work for everyone.  A good idea if you haven’t been to this area before is to download this section of Google Maps before you head out, so you’re prepared.
