Information About the Red Rocks Amphitheater
If you’re using the concert venue as an excuse to go here, you can go during the day before a show starts or on a day when there isn’t an event as well. The amphitheater is open one hour before sunrise and closes one hour after sunset on non concert days. On concert days, it closes at 2PM for sound check.
The amphitheater has A LOT of stairs so many people use it to work out in the mornings. Sometimes yoga classes happen in the amphitheater. And a lot of people just come to see this unique place surrounded by rock formations that looks out over Denver and the mountains.
Navigating Trails and Parking Lots
The Red Rocks Park website has a great map of trails and parking lots here – https://www.redrocksonline.com/explore-red-rocks/recreation/
There are 5 different trails here at Red Rocks Park that all offer slightly different scenery. You can see the red rock formations up close along the Trading Post Trail. More distant views of the rock formations are seen from the other locations around the park. The terrain is a mix or rock, dirt, and sand with stairs that can be slightly steep in some places.
Each Season at Red Rocks Park
The trails at Red Rocks Park are accessible year round. The park is open one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset every day of the year. Each season at Red Rocks looks slightly different, but the red rock formations do provide some beautiful color for photographs no matter what time of year it is. Below we share what each season is like and the pros and cons for each.
Spring Proposals Here
Like many places in Colorado, spring brings unpredictable weather. It could be a sunny clear day or snowy. During the spring, grasses and trees often look bare, but the red rock formations still offer some beautiful color. And contrast of snow against red rocks can be stunning. Trails are also quieter during the spring than in the summer.
Spring Pros: Red Rock Backdrop (sometimes with snow), Less crowds
Spring Cons: Weather unpredictability, brown grasses and bare trees
Summer Proposals Here
Expect Summer at Red Rocks to be busy. More concerts happen here during the summer and it’s also a popular place for hiking, biking, and fitness classes. Sunrise during the summer can be really beautiful here and quiet. The trees and grasses also turn green and offer more color to the landscape.
Summer Pros: Red Rock Backdrop with vibrant plants, Warm summer mornings
Summer Cons: Crowds, Afternoon thunderstorms
Fall Proposals Here
Fall colors appear in some trees around the park, mixing beautifully with the red rocks. Concerts still go on throughout the fall but things slow down a bit. This season also offers cooler temperatures and less of a chance for afternoon thunderstorms.
Fall Pros: Cool temperatures, Scenic views with seasonal color
Fall Cons: Shorter daylight hours, Crowds
Winter Proposals Here
Snow adds contrast to the red rocks, creating a magical setting for winter proposals. Depending on the year, it can sometimes be very cold. If you’re looking to have a mix of snow and red rock formations winter could be a good time to visit, but also spring.
Winter Pros: Quiet trails, Chance of dramatic snowy scenery
Winter Cons: Cold weather, Shorter daylight hours, Icy trail conditions
Tips for Proposing at Red Rocks
Choose the Right Trail: One of the busiest trails is the Trading Post Trail. I would suggest avoiding that trail for the proposal moment (unless you go around sunrise). For more privacy, explore smaller trails nearby like The Mount Vernon Creek Trail or the Red Rocks Trail.
Best Time of Day: The lighting can be nice here throughout the morning and evening depending on the time of day and where you are on the trails. Typically we suggest staying away from the midday hours for better light. If you’re a morning person, sunrise is magical here with soft light and the red rocks. For evening proposals, make sure to avoid concert days (it can be a madhouse of crowds, and a challenging place to park during shows).
Parking: Multiple lots are available; check maps for proximity to your trail of choice. Official Red Rocks Map
Check the Weather: Colorado weather can change quickly. Checking the weather before you go, will help you prepare and be comfortable along the trail. If you’re doing a proposal in cold weather, hand warmers can be a life saver.
Cell Service: Most roads and parking lots at Red Rocks do have cell coverage here, but some trails can have limited coverage.
FAQ’s for Doing a Red Rocks Proposal in Colorado
Is there an entrance fee into the Park? No, there are no fees to visit the park trails or amphitheater. The parking lots are also free.
Do I need a timed entry permit? No, no timed entry permit is needed to go here. But if you’re looking for less crowds try visiting during the week on non-concert days for maximum privacy or sunrise.
Are the trails at Red Rocks difficult? In general the trails are somewhere between an easy-moderate level of hiking. Some sections do have a slight incline and/or stairs, but nothing that’s extremely difficult.
Can I setup a Picnic Here? Most of the trails are narrow, but there are a few spots that allow for a bit more space. Enough space to set up a small picnic for a proposal moment just out of the middle of the trail. If you do setup something for a proposal moment, make sure to follow the guidelines of the park, which include not going off trail to help protect the plant life.
