Each Season at Trail Ridge Road
Trail Ridge Road is NOT open throughout the year. This iconic proposal location has a small window of accessibility, mostly during the summer and fall months. It closes each year typically around late fall due to snow. Because of its high elevation, weather is unpredictable and sometimes can be dangerous here. Be prepared for the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms (which are common in the summer months), high winds, or sudden snow.
The timing for opening and closing the road changes every year depending on the weather. To see current road conditions in the park, visit the park’s website about current road conditions. https://www.nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/road_status.htm
Spring Proposals Here
Most years Trail Ridge Road is closed throughout the spring, but can open if the weather conditions are favorable. If the road does open, its likely there will still be large piles of snow around the area and that the trails will be difficult to access.
Spring Pros: Less crowded if open
Spring Cons: Not typically open, High snow levels make trails hard to access, Cold weather
Summer Proposals Here
The summers along Trail Ridge Road offer some spectacular scenery of the Rocky Mountains. Know that the road can still be closed in early summer if the snow level is high. Typically July and August are great months to visit.
Summer Pros: Accessible during the Summer, Trails are easy to access, Amazing views
Summer Cons: Afternoon thunderstorms, High Winds, Unpredictable weather, Crowds
Fall Proposals Here
During the beginning fall months Trail Ridge is usually open. September can be a great month to visit as well. It typically closes after the first major snow storm of the region. Fall can be cold up here, especially around sunrise or sunset.
Fall Pros: Less crowds, During early fall trails are still easy to access, Amazing views
Fall Cons: Colder weather, High winds, Closes typically at some point during the fall
Winter Proposals Here
Trail Ridge Road is closed for the winter season. So if you’re looking to do a surprise proposal in Rocky Mountain National Park during this time, this location is not available.
Tips for Proposing at Trail Ridge Road
Short Hikes: There are a number of trails that branch off from different parts of Trail Ridge Road. Beautiful views are not hard to find here if you don’t want to hike far. The photos shown in this blog post are from a short hike along the Ute Trail.
Parking: Parking is accessible along the road in many different spots from full parking lots to small parking pull outs.
View Points: There are a few viewpoints with parking lots that you can stop at. I would not suggest these locations for a proposal moment because they are usually crowded areas with many tourists.
Best Time of Day for Proposals: Sunrise here can be absolutely stunning with 360 views of mountains changing different colors of pinks and reds. But if you’re not a morning person, evenings can be beautiful too. Be prepared that if you plan to go during the evening, it’s likely you might run into an afternoon thunderstorm.
Cell Phone Coverage: Cell phone service is almost non-existent here, so don’t plan on having it. If you want to have a reliable map, make sure to download that region of google maps before entering into the park. Also, if you’re meeting a photographer, make a plan of communication and backup plans before going through the front gate.
